Department of Hotel Management : Best Practices
‘Service to man is service to god’, the department of Hotel Management at NIMIT has always felt that a sense of social service comes out of the kindness of the heart and depends largely upon character. The students of the department are encouraged to instill a sense of community and benevolence in all that they do. We follow these ideals while training them to prepare and serve food, clean their surroundings, nurse, and medicate under supervision. Every academic year, the department organizes a minimum of three social service programs. These programs largely cover the following.
- Philanthropic assistance to the poor and depressed section of the society in the neighborhood.
- Charitable healthcare services for the disadvantaged.
- Free medical facilities and childcare service
- Free education, food subsidies, etc.
- College visit to palliative units.
- Support services in employment and job search
- Housing for the poor
The only direct, daily observers of a professor’s classroom teaching performance are the students in the classroom. Students are thus a potentially valuable source of information about their professors’ teaching. SFR has two objectives: first, to improve teaching performance, and second, to provide a rationale and equitable basis for personnel decisions. SFR will focus on the use of student evaluation for improving teaching. In truth, there is no better reason to evaluate than to improve performance. Evaluation provides data with which we can assist the faltering, motivate the tired, to encourage the indecisive. The department collects the feedback on the teaching process followed by teachers from students and makes corrective action to facilitate the teaching-learning process and improve academic results.
A comprehensive and result-oriented Hospitality skill training session was taken up in the department for effective implementation of hospitality skills and organization abilities among student trainees. Hospitality skills have become important for all professional and training programs. The department has always been at the forefront when it comes to hospitality training. We have trained students of Business management to develop etiquettes of F & B service in the restaurant. Most business interviews take place over the dinner table. The HST is also instrumental in handling stressful scenarios such as these. The HST session was also given to Police officials and Panchayat officials of Koratty. As part of HST, all faculty members of the department were sent for training in their respective areas of expertise to branded hotels to learn about emerging trends in the hospitality industry.
