Department of Commerce

The Department of Commerce is one of the largest departments in Naipunnya and was started in the year 2002 under the visionary leadership of Rev. Fr. Sebastian Kalapurackal, Founder and Director of Naipunnya Group of Institutions. The Department of Commerce has got a team of highly qualified faculty members, many of whom hold PhDs, to teach and train young minds in Kerala. The department endeavors to develop thought-leaders who are innovative, ethically strong, socially sensitive, and globally competent. Affiliated with Calicut university, the department offers undergraduate programs Bachelor of Commerce (B Com) (with specialization trifurcated as Finance, Computer Application, and Co-operation), Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) in Marketing, and a Postgraduate program (M.Com) in Commerce (Finance). The courses are designed in such a way that students develop strong industry-relevant training, business-focused learning, strong entrepreneurial values, and principles that could influence their future practice. The department can proudly note that some of our best students have been recruited from top companies like Accenture, E&Y, Genpact, Tech Mahindra Ltd., HDFC Bank, WNS Global Services, and others through our placement cell.

The Department of Commerce focuses on bringing industry intelligence to the classrooms and translates it into future industrial requirements and curricular activities. For instance, we have roped in the industry to teach and research in Naipunnya through outbound programs and industry visits. Similarly, the department hosts Friday markets or the Nimitian Harvest where students are given a platform to engage in real-time selling of products. This gives an opportunity for students to offer their homegrown organic fruits, vegetables, and plant saplings for a price on campus. Friday markets help students experience real-life market situations in order to develop their knowledge of commerce and trade.

Moreover, the state-of-the-art labs and fully digitized classrooms prepare our students for the modern business world and train them with the know-how of tech-supported business practices. These facilities nurture the students to be globally competitive and innovative leaders. The school is fully digitized and facilitates research and learning with relevant e-learning resources.

The Department is currently headed by Dr. Mathew Jose K, who has 33 years of experience in teaching and has worked as a research supervisor for ten years, and has guided eight Ph.D. students from Mahatma Gandhi University and Bharathiyar University. The Department of Commerce is home to the largest number of students on campus and hence, from the year 2020, it was essential to restructure each stream with different coordinators to maintain decorum and quality.
